InPrint Interviews Shadi al Hroub

Shadi al Hroub is a visual artist from Jordan, born in 1982 found his artistic
inspiration while completing his degree in Art & Design from Philadelphia
University, Jordan. Al Hroub uses deep colors to emulate the art
savage style which displays the cruel and dark side of reality. Honored
with numerous organization Awards including University and College
Designers Association in USA, Gulf Print in UAE, Bronze Award at

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where you come from, your education
and what made you get into design.

I am visual artist from Jordan, I found my passion and artistic inspiration before completing my degree in art & design from Philadelphia university. I use deep colors to emulate the art savage style which displays the cruel and dark side of reality.

I see you have you a variety of designs featured on your website. What you are specialized on? Do you also work on some other fields as of print and web? Anything new you have been working on?

In fact, my profession includes creative graphics design; photography, digital paint and tutor in print and web design. I have been worked as campaigns director for biggest organizations such as International Fund for Animal Welfare, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Ambassador for the worldwide logo design annual plus as lecturer of creative design in the American university in different campuses. I was honored to be a jury member in creativity design awards for 2012 and 2013 in USA and this year 2014 in A' design awards in Italy. Currently am looking for the next challenge in the field of International Graphics and Visual Communication Design.  

How do to come up with your ideas? Tell us a little bit about your brain storm and working process. How do you come up with concept?

When you’re working on a project, brainstorming sessions allow you to get your thoughts down in a tangible form. Thumbnails are like icons for thoughts, visual markers that allow you to think through a design. But instead of having to draw out a full version and get lost in the details, you only have to jot down the thumbnail sketch to serve as a reminder of the original concept. Getting through a thumbnail storm session is a lot easier and more effective if you can get yourself into a creative frame of mind. Read a good chapter from your favorite book. Watch some clips from some great films. Have the best music playing and get yourself into a mood that sparks your imagination, allow you to make connections between thoughts and concepts. Creativity doesn’t exist in emptiness. It’s a mindset that you can put yourself into.

How comprehensive would you say your knowledge of design is? Do you think your designs always hit the target audience you are designing for?

The creation of design seeks to take key behavioral characteristics of a firm and use them to build an image that can be presented to target consumers, other stakeholders and the world at large. Well, often I worked with cutting edge technology, using my creativity, and having fun doing it. So am trying to pay attention to detail, creative, and like solving problems and hit the target audience, but sometimes I get lost with my imagination and that's make me start over again.

Are you always 100% happy with your designs?

Actually, Not satisfied 100%, I try to establish a new style, new era, so I always make an efforts to keep my research up to date and try to always improve my vision for design.

How much time does it take to come up with a new design concept? Do you work well under pressure??

In my vision, Time is a tool to think about the imagery that supports your focus, the pace that attracts your audience, the words that communicate to them. I think about the cultural references and landmarks that establish a common frame of reference between the firm and audience. Often I work on pressure, but that's not mean to produce low quality design because of my reputation in design field.

Have you been it situations where problems have arisen between you and the client due to a lack of understanding from either party?

Not really, Thinking of design as a trade is anachronistic and limited. It is more useful to look at the underlying approach to design that a designer takes in order to understand his or her role in the print and digital production process. A designer essentially has two roles in the process: satisfying the design brief and executing the job. Any project begins as a series of preliminary sketches, thoughts or ideas.

Do you market yourself to a particular type of client such as high end design, more towards low cost, or to put an emphasis on any environmental stance you might have?

My career has led me to specialize increasingly in the design major at an international level. This is the path I have chosen for myself to become the best in an area that I find immensely enjoyable. I believe that the experience I have gained over the past years operating several campaigns with non-profit organizations, and the training and knowledge I received would be of enormous benefit to any international brands. In addition, I have enjoyed a reputation for being a very hard-working, intelligent, and industrious individual. My motivation is to completely utilize my accumulated experience and knowledge to the fullest extent possible, becoming a valuable asset for the right firm.

If you could change anything in general about designers, what would it be?

Your mind is your first enemy, if you challenge it, you can challenge others”
Whatever you do, don’t stop to critique. Feel free to review what you’ve done and learn from it, but don’t stop and criticize. Rotate your design upside down and look at it from the bottom, up. Look at it from the side, and at an angle. Look at the areas between the thumbnails and see what hidden messages you’ve left yourself. They’re there; you’ve just got to look. But don’t stop until you’re through.

Any last thoughts to upcoming designers out there?

There is great prestige attached to the world “creative.” Creative people apparently magic up ideas—wonderful solutions to the most complex problems. Ideas, they’re at the heart of every creative process. However, almost no really good ideas are flashes of inspiration. It’s not magic. These people are no different from you. They just have a different way of looking at problems and solving them. The good news is, they use tools that anyone can use. Ideas have to be squeezed out of us every day. To stand up to this challenge, you need to arm yourself with some good tools.
